LIE Summer Reading Program in place

This year Laura Irwin Elementary will be challenging students to keep their reading skills up over the summer by playing reading BINGO which involves all sorts of fun reading tasks.   Students have decorated their very own library tote bags to help pack their library books to and from the public library.

 Kids Free Fishing Day June 1 at Town Pond
 Join the town of Basin and the Basin Area Chamber at the town's fishing pond on Saturday, June 1 at 8 a.m. This is the kick-off of the Saturday events for 2024 Lilac Days.
Free kids fishing poles will be available from North Platte Walleyes Unlimited. Three fishing boxes will go to the children who catch the biggest fish of different species.
The fishing pond is behind the schools in Basin, with access from A Street.

Manderson man facing multiple felony counts of sexual assault

A 41-year-old Manderson man is facing multiple felony charges alleging that he physically and sexually abused a woman over a 10-day period last month.
Arthur Floyd Jones, 41, has been charged with 15 felony counts of sexual assault in the first degree, two counts of felonious restraint and five misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.

May 13 — 7:59 a.m.: Deputies handled an accidental 911 call on Elm Avenue in Burlington.
8:00 a.m.: Crystal Rae Howell was arrested in Basin and charged to serve time sentenced.
10:00 a.m.: Deputies at Big Horn County Sheriff's Office in Basin handled an open 911 call.
11:26 a.m.: On Medicine Lodge Street in Hyattville, deputies responded to an abandoned vehicle.
4:52 p.m.: Deputies handled a rapid 911 ping at BHCSO.
4:54 p.m.: Deputies at BHCSO responded to a lost dog.

First reading of town’s proposed budget passes

The Basin Town Council reviewed the proposed budget during the May 9 regular meeting. It was presented to them by Town CPA Don Russell. The first reading passed.
As presented, the town needs to transfer $244,128 from the capital project fund to the general fund. The town’s income service fund is about $60,000 short. A transfer will be made from the enterprise fund.
“The other big change in this is in the sewer fund,” said Russell.

Council wants more input from residents at meetings

On May 9, the Basin Town Council held a special meeting with the purpose of hearing from town residents about proposed utility rate hikes.
Mayor C.J. Duncan said this was the first time that more than one or two visitors have come to a meeting, despite the council receiving feedback all over town. He admitted it is disheartening: “It would be nice to have a lot more participation from the community all the time on just about any given subject, we deal with: dogs at large, streetlights that are out, fireworks.”

Rep. Lawley to seek second term in House

Rep. Martha Lawley, R-Worland, has announced she will seek a second term. She represents House District 27, which includes Big Horn and Washakie counties. Her current term started in 2023.
“After much thought and prayer, I have filed to run for re-election as your representative of House District 27,” said Lawley. “It has truly been my honor to represent the incredible people of this District the past two years.”

Annual Hyattville Cowboy Carnival slated this Sunday

Load up and head to Hyattville Sunday for the 20th annual Cowboy Carnival.  Bring your lawn chair and spend the day.
Organizer Mary Hyatt Burns said two special events are back this year.  Todd Jones’ “packing demonstration” will include a few basic knots, finding gear and selection of animal. You will get some actual hands-on experience. It starts at 10 a.m.

Racing to a dream: Basin woman sees success in filly racehorse

A Basin resident realized a dream that began as a young girl, being part owner of a winning racehorse.
Georgia Antley Hunt said she fell in love with horse racing since about the age of 10, a dream that came through over many decades and several, unrelated letters.
“I don’t know why [I fell in love with horse racing]. There’s no reason I should have because you know, little girls here, they like feral horses and cow horses.”
