Coins on a tombstone honor veterans

While visiting some cemeteries, you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave.
These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their lives while serving in America’s military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of the coin.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, 2023. What is Veterans Day? Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a public holiday held on the anniversary of the end of World War I, on Nov. 11, to honor US veterans and victims of all wars.
This holiday is a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Local woman does 50-mile ruck march challenge for Veterans

Carolyn Burinsky of Basin is no stranger to the challenges of veterans. One of those challenges is suicide. Veterans are at a 57% higher risk of suicide than peers who have not served. Suicide is the second highest leading cause of death for Veterans under age 45.
Burinsky comes from a very large military family on both her mother and father’s sides, dating back to WW2.

Annual Thank Our Heroes Veterans run is Friday

“Inactive” Marine Nick Hernandez’s third annual Thank Our Heroes run will take place this Friday.
Hernandez says he is an “inactive” Marine — rather than a former or retired one — because he is a Marine for life.
This year’s route is different from the previous years. This year he will start at Laura Irwin Elementary and Middle/High School in Basin at 5 a.m.

Good news and bad news at mental health town hall

Although uplifting messages were shared, with the subject matter of mental health and suicide in Wyoming, the atmosphere at Governor Mark Gordon’s Mental Health Town Hall at the Wyoming Boys’ School on Oct. 25 was a somber one.
In the wake of the news of House Bill 65 replacing the permanent funding plan for the 988 Wyoming Suicide Prevention Hotline with a biennial funding system, the future of mental health activism in Wyoming has become uncertain.

Wyo-Ben looks to expand following purchase of M-I SWACO operations

Wyoming is the nation’s leader in bentonite production, and for more than 70 years, Greybull has been home to two production facilities, with M-I SWACO’s
base of operations just north of town and Wyo-Ben’s a few miles further up Road 26.
All that changed earlier this week when Wyo-Ben, Inc., announced the acquisition of M-I SWACO’s bentonite assets in the Greybull area. In a release, Wyo-Ben called it a move that “strengthens  our position as a leader in the industry and paves the way for exciting opportunities and growth.”

Deployed military personnel with local ties sought

Big Horn County School District No. 4 students will be mailing packages to deployed soldiers and sailors.
They are currently seeking names and addresses of military personnel with local ties.  
Those wishing to donate to the package may drop off items such as batteries, hard candy, deodorant, small games/puzzles, three-in-one shampoo/conditioner/body wash and foot powder.
Names, addresses and donations should be at the school by Nov. 15.

Full-time PA appointed at Basin Clinic

Tiffany Tanner, PA-C, brings 14 years of experience and a desire to practice medicine in a close-knit community to her new role as the primary care provider at Cody Regional Health’s Basin Clinic.
“My dream was to become the primary healthcare provider for a community where I could truly get to know each patient on a personal level, beyond just their medical needs,” she said.

County commissioners get update regarding EMT class

Melissa Cook, community vitality and health educator from the UW Extension Office in Basin, attended the Oct. 17 meeting of the Big Horn County Commission.
Cook talked about an EMT class that runs from Nov. 14 until Feb. 17. “I’m partnering with Northwest Community College and therefore I’m not competing against them anymore,” she said. “It’s through them. However, I still am pretty much doing the class as far as everything else. People have to pay $1,000 to Northwest to pay for the class I had set up to begin with. “
