Supreme Court upholds District Court judgement for TCT

Nearly nine years after the sale of Tri County Telephone Cooperative exchange, a lawsuit filed after the sale appears to be settled with a recent Wyoming Supreme Court decision.
In an opinion dated Oct. 24, 2023, the State Supreme Court ruled that the District Court, under Judge Janson Conder did not err when he issued a summary judgement for TCT, Neil Schlenker, Big Horn Telecommunications and all other defendants.

Commission agrees damage to airport runway nobody’s fault

Speaking at the Oct. 17 meeting of the Big Horn County Commission, Kip McIntosh of Cloud Peak Drags/KCT Racing and County Airport Manager Paul Thur agreed that the damage to the runway sealant was nobody’s fault.
Cloud Peak’s last race at the South Big Horn County airport was in August. A test double coating had been put on the runway. The goal was to get more years out of the surface.

Free mental health sessions available to Big Horn County residents

Big Horn County Prevention Specialist Travis Sylvester appeared before the commissioners via Zoom on October 17.
He explained that through the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, nearly every person in BHC qualifies for six free mental health sessions. This is through the Wyoming Department of Health. It is targeted for the ag, farming and rodeo communities. Vouchers are provided by Grace for 2 Brothers. Those interested may call 307-256-3344.

Town residents to receive post cards regarding water draining into sewer

At its Oct. 26 meeting, the Basin Town Council reviewed a rough draft of a post card that will be sent to residents.
The card states that effective June 1, 2024, no groundwater or stormwater may be put into the town’s sewer system. Both the town code and the Department of Environmental Quality support the town council’s decision.

Amid teacher exodus, Wyoming eyes $68M to cover rising K-12 costs, inflation

Teacher pay in Wyoming has seen little growth over the last decade, leaving educators struggling to keep pace with inflation, which spiked in 2021 and has remained high since.
The number of teachers leaving the field has also spiked. At 12% this year, the teacher exit rate is at the highest level recorded since 2010, Wyoming Department of Education data shows.

BHC unemployment rate falls to 2.7%

The Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reported today that
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged from August to September at 2.9%, according to the Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services
Wyoming’s unemployment rate was much lower than its year-ago level of 3.8% and lower than the current U.S. rate of 3.8%.

Manderson fire protection restored

Big Horn County Fire District No. 3 Chairman Joe Wildman and Worland Fire Protection District Chief Chris Kocher attended the Oct. 12 meeting of the Manderson Town Council to discuss the possible reinstatement of fire protection.
