Big Horn County capitalizes on expanded property tax refunds

After a 2023 bill made more Wyomingites eligible for the state’s property tax refund program, nearly four times as many refunds were approved in Big Horn County in 2022 as compared to 2021.
The state of Wyoming has funded the refund program for three of the last four tax years — it was not funded for the 2020 tax year.
The program approves applications based on an applicant’s income level, and refund totals are generally half of the median property tax amount in each county.

Rebels to honor military at Rocky Mountain game

Riverside High School's football team is using Friday night's home game against Rocky Mountain as an opportunity to convey appreciation to members of the military for all they do for the community and the country.  
"They protect what we hold dear, our freedom of choice," said Olivia Strohschein, who is helping to organize the event. "Our military men sign up willingly to serve our county and to preserve our freedoms."

Scammers may change the way they scam, but the result is the same.
In 2022, reported consumer losses to fraud totaled $8.8 billion — a 30% increase from 2021, according to the most recent data from the Federal Trade Commission.
Residents in Big Horn County are impacted by scams on daily basis with phone calls threatening “your power is going to be turned off unless you pay now” to your “Social Security number has been suspended.”
More recently, people have been targeted through Facebook, PayPal and texts.

Weed complaints and concerns discussed at council meeting

Weeds were a focus of discussion at the Sept. 14 meeting of the Basin Town Council. Mayor CJ Duncan said the town has received several complaints — “very specific complaints.”
One of the complaints was on Wyoming Avenue. Duncan asked if the town crew had looked at this location.  Town Foreman Mike Dellos said they had. The crew got the weeds it could along the edge of the street, but because of the drain, there is no way to bring in large equipment.

Final geoscience summer lecture Oct. 14
The Big Horn Basin Dinosaur and Geoscience Museum will host the final talk of its 2023 summer lecture series in the Greybull Public Library meeting room on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
Dr. Emanuel Tschopp of the Universität Hamburg in Germany will present his lecture “Digital Dinosaurs: How microscopic details from dinosaurs from the Bighorn Basin inform us about their life 150 million years ago.”

Chinese restaurant to close Sunday

A popular Chinese restaurant in downtown Greybull, Lan’s Beijing Garden is closing at the end of the week.
Lan Kang, who took over the restaurant after the passing of her husband Denny in 2020, says it’s her only option, pointing out that her cook and friend Martin Tang is returning to China and that she’s been unable to hire anyone to replace him.
“It’s sad,” she said. “I’ve been here for a while and the community’s been very nice to me.”

Chiropractor expects to reopen practice next month

For more than 39 years, Dr. Brett Ohman was the first person many Greybull residents called when they felt pain in their bones, nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments.  As a chiropractor, he’s the one who took the pain away.  If he couldn’t, he’d direct them to someone who would.

Hospital-run medical flight service begins next week

Promising high-quality, cost-effective air medical transport services, Cody Regional Health and St. Vincent Healthcare intend to launch their First Flight of Wyoming program on Sunday, Oct. 1, with South Big Horn County Airport in Greybull serving as base of operations.
Phillip Franklin, the Cody Regional Health EMS director, said two years of planning have gone into the launch.

Flashing speed signs, time clocks discussed in Manderson

Manderson Town Councilwoman Judy Bury finished out the town council meeting on September 14 with a question about getting flashing speed signs in the town. “I still want yellow blinking signs to warn people that there is a 30 mph spend limit and a 40 mile. All these towns have it where it shows 45 with an arrow.”
She continued that when people turn off U.S. Highway 16/20 on to Wyoming Highway 31, the speed limit goes from 70 mph to 30 mph. There is no warning. Traveling from Hyattville into Manderson, the speed limit goes from 70 mph to 40 mph to 30 mph without warning.
