A Casper oilman and former Basin resident, was credited with having saved a Scottsbluff, Neb., family from possible death by freezing in the blizzard-swept road north of Lusk. Matt M. Newell, battling drifts to reach Lusk after a trip to the oil fields near Newcastle, came across a man, his wife and small son, in a stalled car. This was at 10 o’clock at night with the temperature at 11 degrees below zero. Newell took the stranded travelers as far as he could in his own car, and when blocked by drifts, walked six miles into Lusk. Arriving at Lusk early in the morning, he sent a highway patrol car out to rescue the family.
