Adulting takes grit

When I was thinking of what I should write about for this week’s column, I was stumped. My mind kept drawing a blank. I stared at my computer screen waiting for the words to appear far too long. Still, I was unable to come up with an inspirational message or even a funny faux pas, both of which I try to incorporate in my column when I can. The more I thought about my conundrum, the more I realized it is similar to life’s reality.
As we go through the daily grind of living, sometimes it is hard to find the inspirational message or see the humor. Having always had a “glass half full” attitude, those days are the ones that catch me off guard. Today has been one of those for me. As I sit here still and quiet, my mind wanders to the not-so-fun part of adulting; how there are not enough hours in the day for my long to-do list, how my want list gets scrapped for the need list because there are bills to pay and groceries to buy. I think of the never-ending pile of laundry that seems impossible for two people to create and having to go to work when you don’t feel good. Then, of course, there is missing and worrying for our children that have moved away from home and are now off adulting themselves.
As I listed just a few of the struggles of adulting, the message seems loud and clear. There is inspiration and yes even humor in the reality of everyday life.  Adulting takes grit and resilience. Sure, you get to do what you want when you want, but then it is you and only you that pays the consequences or reaps the reward. If you miss work, your check is short. If you decide you want to buy concert tickets instead of pay your electric bill, your lights get shut off. Didn’t feel like doing the laundry? You might just end up wearing your husband’s underpants to work! If any of those things aren’t inspirational enough to motivate someone, I don’t know what could be.
So hats off to all you adults out there. Give yourself a pat on the back for having what it takes to adult day after day or survive the consequences!
