American Legion Auxiliary names essay winners
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) holds an Americanism essay contest each year. The contest is on a local, state, and national level. It is open to students in grades 3-12.
Submissions are sent to the local ALA units to be judged. The first and second place winners are then sent to the ALA Department of Wyoming to compete against students statewide in the same grade group. The state winners are then submitted the ALA national competition for further judging.
The topic varies each year. This year it was “What does freedom mean to me.” The Marion Tanner Unit #29 of Basin received 10 essay submissions this year from grades 5-6 and 7-8.
The essays were judged by outside sources and the follow winners were selected. First place for grades 5-6 was Samantha Bassett; second went to Tell Whitaker. For grades 7-8, first place went to Hannah Suiter and there was no second-place winner.
The three essays were sent on to the Department of Wyoming for additional judging. The Americanism Committee Chairman Jerilyn Hall present the winners with certificates and prize money.
