Basin pool is open

The Basin Community Pool opened June 21 and will close August 15. Mayor CJ Duncan said only having two lifeguards is impacting the operation of the pool this summer.

At the June 7 town council meeting Duncan told the council that a certified pool operator had been hired. Three individuals applied for lifeguard but only two passed the test.

This means at this point, no swimming lessons this year. It also means limiting the number of children in the pool at a time. The rules for the Basin pool have been 30 kids. Those t 5 and under must be accompanied in the pool by an adult plus wear some type of flotation devise.

Pool Operator Roger DesRosier and Duncan have been monitoring and testing the pool to see how it is leaking. Duncan believes the majority is around the drain baskets and not the main line. “We lost 24 inches of water in less than six days. Jesse (town engineer) figured up a normal rate of evaporation. It should be one-quarter inch a day so 2-3 inches over those six days.”

The pool will be in operation this summer and when it closes in August the town will work on fixing the slow leak.

The pool is open Monday through Saturday 8 to 9 a.m. for lap swimming, 1 to 4 p.m. for open swim and Thursday-Saturday 6 to 8 p.m. for night swim.  Admission is $2.
