Burlington’s speech and debate team has just a couple weeks left in its season. The team competed in the last regular season meet last weekend at the Wind River District Tournament in Riverton.

It was a large tournament with 248 individual competitors and 18 other teams joining Burlington.

“It was a very intense three days of competition,” said Coach Scott McBride. “Some kids performed their piece six times.”

While none of Burlington’s competitors qualified for Nationals, they had some great performances that saw them break into later rounds. Jessica Mendez-Perez broke into Oratory quarterfinals and earned second Oratory alternate.

Raygen Andrew broke in Informative semifinals. Aubbri Wagner broke in Informative quarterfinals. Kitzen Schatz broke in Lincoln Debate quarterfinals and House Supers. Coach McBride was also honored with the New Coach of the Year award.

“Miss St. Clair and I are so proud of the kids’ dedication and hard work,” said McBride.

Kitzen Schatz, who is a competitor and the team’s media specialist, said “I would also like to note that I personally am so proud of everyone, their hard work and the effort they have put into making Speech and Debate feel like a home.”

Burlington will head to the state tournament March 13-15.
