Burlington Huskies already qualify one for state in first meet in Wind River
The Huskies joined 15 other teams and kicked off their track and field season at the Wind River Ice Breaker in Pavillion on Saturday. “It was nice to get our first track meet under our belt,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “We were missing quite a few kids to family events, injuries, and not having enough practices, but for the ones that were able to come, we had some good performances.
“Our throwers picked up where they left off last year, with Matt Tempany and Taft Winters with some good opening throws. Bradford Davidson and Connor Hoyt both went under 5 minutes in the mile in some windy conditions.”
The girls were led by Sarah McNiven, who is looking to repeat as a state champion in the high jump. She took first in the event and was the first state qualifier for Burlington. Adison Haslam also grabbed second in both the 200 and triple jump.
“We have a talented group of freshmen this year. Lauren Gotfredson got personal bests in her throwing events, as well as in the 100-meter dash. Hyrum McNiven had an impressive triple jump. Chase Bassett wasn’t able to pole vault on Saturday, but he’ll be ready to go at our home meet this Friday.”
Olson is impressed with his athletes work ethic so far to start the season. “I like how our kids have been practicing. A lot of them are taking it upon themselves to push themselves to be better each day. It’s nice, as coaches, to have athletes that are self-motivated. We always like to emphasize the importance of tracking our own personal bests rather than constantly comparing ourselves with other athletes across the state.”
Burlington will host its meet on Friday with field events starting at 1:30 and running events starting at 2:30 p.m. “We’re excited to host our meet. There are very few 1A schools in the state that host track meets. We’re grateful for all the volunteers and hard work that goes into hosting a meet. It’s always fun to compete in front of our own crowd and recognize our seniors,” said Olson.
