Burlington Huskies track season begins
With the warming weather and occasional snow flurries one can tell that Wyoming track and field season is underway. The Burlington Huskies have been back at it and are looking forward to the season. “The boys have a goal of winning their third consecutive state championship,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “The girls team was on the podium last year and are looking to bring home another trophy.”
With over 40 athletes out for the first week and a few more expected as other sports and activities come to an end, the Huskies are planning ways to use their large team. “Having a big track team allows us to fill our relays with quality athletes and pick up a lot of points in events where we might not be placing first or second,” said Olson. “This works especially well when we’re willing to do events that sometimes aren’t our ‘favorites’ but will help the team. The kids this year have shown up with great attitudes and are willing to work.”
Coaches Cheryl Haslam, Phil Olson and Mike Aagard will be coming back with Coach Ryan Olson and they have some returning impactful athletes. Kyler Winters won the state championship in 1A pole vault last year and has competed in indoor track with Cody’s state championship team the last couple of seasons, winning the indoor state 3A pole vault and breaking the record with a jump of 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches earlier in the month. Weston Gotfredson and Sarah McNiven are also returning athletes who earned a lot of points at the state meet last year. “There may be some school records falling this year,” said Olson. “We’ve got some great athletes.”
The Huskies competed with 13 other teams at the Wind River Ice Breaker Meet over the weekend. Lander, Big Piney, Jackson and Kemmerer took the top four spots on both sides but the Lady Huskies finished seventh and the Huskies took sixth with less than their full teams. “It was great to get one in early, after Cody’s meet was canceled the day before. I was impressed how many kids were able to meet or surpass their personal bests in their first meet of the year. James McNiven beat his two-mile personal best by 20 seconds. Hailee Winterholler got a personal best in discus. We’re excited to have ten new freshman and first-time track kids joining our team,” said Olson.
The Huskies will host their home meet on Friday with field events starting at 1:30 and running events starting at 2 p.m. with the 3200 relay and all other running events following at 2:30.
