Burlington Speech & Debate takes second place in 1A/2A sweepstakes in Worland
Burlington’s speech and debate team has continued to compete and improve, with tournaments before the break in Worland and online.
The team traveled to Worland where it placed second in the 1A/2A sweepstakes and Raygen Andrew placed third in the Informative category. “The team did great, especially with all the issues this tournament had getting going; they were troopers with the changes and uncertainty,” said Coach Leah St. Clair. “We were missing two of our members, just four competitors for this tournament, but of those four, three broke to compete in semis and one placed in finals. We were especially proud of the sweepstakes placing this go around. There were seven to eight other 1A/2A schools that they were competing against for that spot.”
Cheyenne East High School hosted the ASYNC Holiday Classic in an online format. Burlington joined 39 other schools from Wyoming, Colorado, California and across the nation. “These online tournaments are great practice tournaments that give some fabulous feedback for competitors. They didn’t place for this one, but they got to see how they compare to competitors across the country and get feedback from judges who have not seen their pieces before. Within the individual rounds, our competitors didn’t do too bad and we were able to see what some national judges might be looking for. With doing this ASYNC tournament fairly early in the season, we’re now able to take that feedback to help our competitors improve and hopefully give them some new techniques for our future tournaments this season,” said St. Clair.
Burlington will be preparing for its next tournament Jan. 16-17 in Riverton.
