“Which African country experienced a Civil War that resulted in an independent southern nation in 2011? (Sudan).”
“Which scientific law is stated as V = IR? (Ohm’s Law).”
These are just two of the 127 questions that Burlington’s Knowledge Bowl team answered correctly at the 38th annual Big Horn Knowledge Bowl, held Dec. 6 at Greybull High School. Burlington sent two teams to join 15 other teams from across the Big Horn Basin to participate in the five-round competition, with one written round and four oral rounds. Burlington’s A team took second place behind Lovell, who answered 130 questions correctly. Cody took third and Burlington’s B team was right behind in fourth place.
Burlington students, Jordan Broederlow, Kitzen Schatz, Taft Winters, Rebecca Bullinger, Hannah Bullinger, Faith Davidson, Colt Haslam, Paul McNiven, Jordan Michaels and Brikton Wardell were chosen to represent Burlington after scoring the highest in a 100-question test given to the entire high school.
“I was really happy with how this team performed this year. They’ve probably practiced together as much as any team I’ve had in 27 years and it showed, missing out on first place by just three questions,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “I love working with these kids. It’s great having a chance for them to showcase their knowledge in a fun format like this. I’m always impressed with what they know.”
Teams will continue to compete next month, when the Wyoming Academic Challenge will be held at Northwest College. This series of competitions will hold meets at various community colleges around the state, inviting all schools across Wyoming to participate in the monthly contests.
