The Burlington Huskies had a successful start to the track and field season in Pavillion at the Wind River Ice Breaker meet over the weekend. Out of 12 teams, the boys ran away with a first-place team finish and a few state qualifiers. The boys finished with 143 points, outdistancing Thermopolis in second with 111 points and Kemmerer in third with 96 points. On the girls’ side, Burlington took sixth with 61 points and prequalified a relay team.
“It was nice to see kids put into practice what they’ve been working on the last two weeks,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “We saw a lot of kids trying new events. Over half of our team are either freshmen or new to the team this year. Now we get to have a baseline where we can start and work towards improving those marks each week.”
Howard McNiven qualified for state in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:37. Mickey Maroni also qualified in the discus with a throw of just over 120 feet. “I’m pretty proud of Mickey,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “He has worked hard with these throws for years now, perfecting his form, and it’s great to see it pay off with a qualifying mark. To get it done this early in the season is really impressive.”
Joining McNiven and Maroni in qualifying for state were Bruce McNiven and Joe Bassett in the high jump, clearing 5’10 and 5’6 respectively, and the boys 4X400 relay team of Paul McNiven, Bassett, Jordan Broederlow and Jordan Michaels with a time of 3:53.02.
Other notable finishes for the boys included Broederlow’s first-place finish in the 200 meters, Michaels’ first-place finish in the 400 and H. McNiven and P. McNiven placing first and second in the 800 meters.
The girls also saw some strong performances with Naomi McNiven, Brynn Preator, Sky Olsen and Mackenzie Mehr on the prequalifying 4X400 team. “Brynn had a great opening meet high jump mark of 4’9 and Naomi  in the triple jump with a mark of 31 feet 8 inches,” said Olson. “The girls were missing a couple of their normal point getters, as Jessie Michaels and Breanne Walker are returning from some basketball injuries; we will be excited to get them back soon.”
“I’m really enjoying this team. They come to practice every night, ready to work and get better. There is good chemistry and the kids enjoy being around each other. I like it when our team tent is empty at the meet, it means the kids are out at the events, cheering each other on,” ended Olson.
The Huskies will head to Cody on Thursday with both running events and field events starting at 10 a.m.
