Burlington track gearing up for regional

The Burlington Huskies joined 23 other teams at the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis on Friday. The Lady Huskies placed eighth in the overall team competition and the Huskies placed sixth. “This is always one of our most enjoyable meets,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “Most teams consider it ‘pre-regionals,’ as we try to narrow down the events that our athletes will be doing in Shoshoni this weekend. A lot of teams are there, including some 1A teams from the south that we haven’t seen this year.”
Kyler Winters won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, and another 4X400 relay team qualified for state. “We’ve had some impressive relay times with our boys this year. We’ll see if we actually run the same kids though. Sometimes we need to pull kids from the relays, knowing they might help us out more in open events. These kinds of decisions are what keep coaches up late at night.”
Paul McNiven was another individual winner, placing first in the mile. “He absolutely crushed his personal best time with a 4:44 finish against some great competition. Connor Hoyt was also impressive, going sub 5 minutes for the first time. His 4:54 time improved on his personal best by 13 seconds. Our distance kids work so hard. Earlier in the week, they were sprinting 200s and 400s long after everyone else had gone home. It started to snow and it still wasn’t enough to make them want to finish their workout early. It’s that kind of work ethic that pays huge dividends this late in the season.”
On the girls’ side, Linnie McNiven shaved 5 seconds off her personal best in the 800 meters and 11 seconds off her mile with a time of 5:50. Joey Chatwin took 11 seconds off her two-mile time. “Paxton Philpott continues to impress in the 300 hurdles and looks to score points in that event at state,” said Olson. “Breanne Walker had the third best jump in the pole vault. She has been working hard in that event and will be chasing an all-state position in Casper in a couple of weeks.
“It’s an exciting time for our teams. Our boys will try to make it eight consecutive region championships. Our girls should also bring home a trophy if everyone does their part. It is a fun team to be around and we’re looking forward to doing some great things these next couple of weeks,” said Olson.
The Huskies will be Shoshoni this weekend for the Class 1A West Regional. Field events will start at noon on Friday and running events start at 1:45 p.m. On Saturday, field events will start at 9 and running events at 10 a.m.
