45-day comment period reopened

A new 45-day comment period will open on Big Horn County School Dist. No. 4’s concealed carry policy after the school board voted to vacate their old proposal in favor of recommendations by the school’s attorney Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The rule change, to require staff members choosing to concealed carry to submit to training requirements, is largely the same as the first proposal, adding a reference to concealed carry permit law W.S. § 6-8-104(a)(ii) for clarification. The board intends to adopt the rule at its Oct. 14 meeting, with opportunity for community members to submit public comment any time before that date in writing to keith.campbell@bgh4.k12.wy.us.

TITLE IX INVESTIGATION

Superintendent Keith Campbell shared with the school board that a Title IX investigation the district is involved in will soon conclude. The investigation reportedly began toward the end of last school year and ran through the summer.

“I can’t tell you a lot… Now, we’ll let you know, it’s in the hands of the decision makers right now, probably within days of a final decision being reached,” Campbell said.

TEN SLEEP ATHLETES APPROVED

Campbell asked for board weigh-in regarding the opportunity for Ten Sleep athletes to join the Rebels at Riverside High School this year.

“I have not been approached by any administration in Ten Sleep at all,” Campbell said. The suggestion came through athletic director communications; with Ten Sleep potentially not having enough girls for a full volleyball team this season.

“I’m all for it if they want to come play. It doesn’t change our classification at all,” RMHS principal Matt Jensen said. The board made no official action, but gave their approval of Ten Sleep athlete participation should the need arise.

OTHER NEWS

Business manager Trevor Whitaker reported that cement on the new CTE building was soon to be completed, with framing to start within a few weeks. Conduit for a scoreboard at the new football field has been laid.

The board approved a roughly 25-cent raise in lunch prices across the board, with breakfast priced at $2.20 for all students, $2.55 for staff and lunch at $3.15 for LIE and RMS students, $3.55 for high school students and $5.25 for staff.

A board policy to allow staff to carry three unused personal days into the next year’s sick leave passed.

Changes to the school’s travel policies were completed to make them more inline with grant monitoring.

Campbell suggested the board move to update their 2017 strategic plan, they requested more information on potential partners in that effort.

The Booster Club golf tournament will not be held this year due to difficulty acquiring teams. “Financially we are better, we have more money to start this year than we did last year, even without the golf tournament,” Jensen said.
