Dennis W. Peters

Dennis W. Peters, 72, died May 11, 2024, at home surrounded by family. He was born Dec. 6, 1951, in Oxnard, Calif., the son of Willard S. and Mildred L. (Garner) Peters.

After graduating from Hueneme High School, Dennis worked as an auto parts store associate in Port Hueneme before deciding to move to Billings, Mont., to live with his brother Sam. He worked in construction, at a local refinery, and at Selover Buick in the parts department where he met the love of his life, Dawn.

After a brief courting period, Dennis relocated to Basin, Wyo., marrying Dawn on May 8, 1975. A few years later, in 1979, he began his career in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff and jailer in Big Horn County.

Less than a year later, he joined the Basin Police Department as a part-time officer. He quickly rose to the top, accepting the position as chief of police where he served the community of Basin for 32 years with distinction and honor before retiring in 2011.

He also served as a certified Firefighter II for the Basin Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT – Intermediate for At - wood Family Ambulance Service. He is survived by his wife Dawn, son Matthew and daughter-in-law Kara, daughter Aastee and significant other Tom Skovgard, brother Tom, sister Audrey and his four grandkids, Keyean, Abigail, Aidan and Mathen.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at First Baptist Church, 21 Highway 30, Basin, WY 82410. Those who wish to remember Dennis in a special way, please make donations in lieu of ow ers to the Wyoming Peace Officers Association.
