Destination Imagination

Laura Irwin Elementary saw two teams bring home top honors from the state Destination Imagination tournament in Casper recently. Coach Cassie Russell described the showing as “another standout year” after months of practice in creative problem solving.

“The Ramen Noodles” won first place overall in the technical category, with the challenge to design and produce an original game show. The team researched classics like “Jeopardy!” and “The Price is Right” and came up with their own competition: “Win or Lose.” Contestants played by trying to identify celebrities in extreme close-up photos.

“To bring the set to life, the students engineered a prize box with a hydraulic door, integrated custom lighting, and produced a full soundscape featuring buzzers, audience cheers, and a theme song,” Russell reported. “Despite a set malfunction during the competition, the team stayed composed to secure their victory.”

LIE also saw success in the fine arts, with “The Thunder Birds” earning second overall for their original superhero and villain design, complete with backstories and a “climatic nettle scene exploring themes of redemption.” The team was asked to master theater makeup, painting backdrops, and crafting a light-up costume.

“Their success was especially impressive given a late-season hurdle: the group dropped from six members to four with only four practices remaining. The students worked tirelessly to consolidate roles and redesign their skit, proving their resilience,” Russell said.

The work of local volunteers made the program possible; Russell thanked Keri DeFord, Sarah Hing, Kelsee Nelson, Mazi George, Charley Russell and Tony Nelson for their mentorship this season. LIE Principal Katie Seeley was also thanked for her support.

“The district-wide commitment to Destination Imagination continues to provide elementary students with the confidence and collaborative skills needed to excel as they transition into middle school activities,” Russell said.
