Five more Huskies qualify for state meet

Burlington competed in Worland last Tuesday at the D&D Invitational.

“We had some great times and marks, led by Connor Hoyt,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “He prequalified for state and got his personal bests in both the mile and the two mile. That’s tough to do in an afternoon meet, without a lot of rest time between events. Connor has really stepped it up these past few weeks. He’s become a real leader with our distance kids and never misses a workout.”

Joining Hoyt on the boy’s side, Rykael Andrew also prequalified in the shot put with a distance of 41-0.75. “He is ranked among the best 1A boys in the state,” said Olson. “He’s spent a lot of time in the weight room this past year, which is paying off his senior year. Each Week, Levi Wardell is surpassing his personal best in the Pole Vault, this week going 11-6. James Mears got three personal bests during the meet, and Bruce McNiven got his season best in the long jump and triple jump.

“I’ve also been really impressed with Brian O’Barr this year. This is a kid that never misses practice, quietly does his workouts and does everything he’s asked to do. He’s improved his triple jump by over 3 feet this year. He’s a good example of what a lot of our athletes are doing this year. They might not have the best marks in the state, but continue to improve each week and each season. I think that’s just as impressive as our state champions.”

On the girls’ side, Paxton Philpott and Breanne Walker prequalified in the high jump, both clearing 4-11 and Hailee Winterholler also prequalified in the discus with a throw of 96-8.

“We’re just outside of a month now before the state meet. The weather is starting to cooperate during our practices and the kids are working hard. I think the kids are getting excited about what they can do individually and as a team,” said Olson.

The Huskies will be in Cowley on Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Invitational. Field events and the 3200 Meter Relay will start at 9:30 a.m. and the rest of the running events will start at 10:15 a.m.
