Forest Service office open limited hours
Due to staffing shortages that have impacted services provided, the Medicine Wheel Ranger District office in Greybull, Wyoming, is open by appointment. As always, it is a good idea to call ahead prior to visiting any of the Bighorn National Forest offices to ensure the services you need can be provided with the staff available.
“Because of key staffing vacancies and the inability to fill those positions, we are unable to process permit requests and conduct other business transactions at the office,” said Mark Foster, the Medicine Wheel District Ranger. “Our staff are still able to answer questions, but unfortunately, we cannot perform transactions.”
If you wish to schedule an appointment with any Medicine Wheel Ranger District staff, please call (307) 548-5338. The Bighorn National Forest will address this shortfall by allowing mail-in permits.
Customers seeking to purchase a post-and-pole or firewood permit can still obtain the permit forms at the Greybull office. These forms are available outside the front door of the office.
Customers must then send the permit form to either the Sheridan or Buffalo offices.
Staff at the offices in Sheridan or Buffalo will process and transmit the permit back to the requestor.
Please allow a seven- to 10-day lead time to process these permits.
The forest is also working to implement an online e-permit system that would allow the people to purchase these and other permits directly online.
