Free Farmer’s Market Monday in Greybull

The Kindness Project will host its first Free Farmer’s Market at the Greybull rec center Monday, July 20 from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. 

Hayley Jackson launched the Kindness Project this spring with the hopes of creating a support network to connect people in need with resources and promoting local volunteer opportunities. A librarian, Jackson has offered dry goods and other support from the Greybull and Basin branches. Online, The Kindness Project Facebook group allows members to make requests or offer free items to those in need. 

The Free Farmer’s Market will be the organization’s first major event. It will be supported by Mackenzie McDonald’s community garden, located on the south side of Greybull near the elementary school, which has early vegetables and herbs available. 

“For the space, we’ve plotted a lot of it,” Jackson said. Plants were donated by Joe Yarborough of High Country Gardens, with seeds from the library’s donated seed library also assisting. Currently, the community garden is small enough volunteers are not needed. In the future, they hope to expand their efforts, however. 

Jackson is still in search of individual gardeners with excess produce to donate to the Free Farmer’s Market. Food can be donated up until the day of the event; Jackson anticipates setup will begin at the rec center around 1 p.m. Or, for the prepared, donations can be dropped off at the Greybull library any time prior. 

Along with food, both produce and non-perishables, Jillian Lorash will provide her clothing exchange, which was highly successful late last year. Friends of the Gryebull Library will offer free books. 

The Greybull Recreation District has donated the space for the event, anyone and everyone is welcome. In the future, Jackson hoped to plan another event around the fall harvest. 

Jackson also invited the public to join The Kindness Project’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1895424107837865. She hopes to expand the group to reach more people throughout the Big Horn Basin.
