G-R wrestlers fare well in B division at Riverton tournament
Greybull-Riverside saw one of its wrestlers place in the A division at Saturday’s Spartan Invitational in Riverton.
Kenneth McClure went 2-2, good for fifth place.
The team’s only other A division wrestler, Riley Wiggins, did not place, going 0-2.
It was a different story in the B and girls divisions, with several G-R grapplers finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes.
Braxten Link and Kaluha Woolsey took first place, with Link breaking through in the 77-pound B division and Woolsey in the 119- to 128-pound girls division.
Other placers included Isaiah Palato, who was second; Marshall Brown, who was third; Hunter Craft, fourth; Ben Jacobs, Jaxon Womack and Levi Cochrane, who placed fifth; and Tell Edeler, Sophia Wilkerson and Eric VanHeule, who placed sixth.
The tournament came on the heels of a difficult Thursday night dual with Powell.
“I knew Powell would be tough — they have quite a few kids out and when you have that kind of competition in the room, it makes everyone tougher,” said Coach Mark Sanford. “We lost a few, but we also learned we could battle with some of those kids, so it wasn’t that bad.
“The Riverton tournament went really well. The kids really wrestled well and made quite an improvement from last week. Effort was good, their knowledge base improved, a few kids got their first win or more than just one win.”
Of his team’s top placers, Sanford said Link “beat a kid who beat him the week before,” Woolsey “came out aggressive and ready to step it up” to the challenge and that Brown “would have probably been in the top two” had he not been on the same side of the bracket as the eventual champ at his weight.
