Greybull-Riverside grapplers captured three individual titles at Saturday’s Big Horn Basin Conference middle school wrestling tournament in Thermopolis.

Maythe Garay, Harper Juneau and Marshall Brown went unbeaten in their respective weight classes to pace G-R, which was joined in the 10-team field by Powell, Thermopolis, Lander, Cody, Riverton, Worland, Rocky Mountain, Lovell and Shoshoni.

Garay won the girls 126-pound title, Harper Juneau took top honors at 138 (and finished third at 145) and Brown claimed victory in the B division’s 77-pound class.

G-R entered only one wrestler in the highly competitive A division. Riley Wiggins went 2-1, finishing second. “He wrestled well until he got to the finals, where the Jolley kid (from Rocky Mountain) was ready for us,” said Coach Mark Sanford.

Highlights on the girls’ side, meanwhile, included Garay’s win at 126 pounds, which included a “revenge” win in the finals over a girl from Lovell who beat her earlier in the year; third place finishes of Tatum Triplett and  Delta Craft; “a couple of nice wins” by Ryan Whisenant and the growth shown by Olivia Wenzel, Sophia Wilkinson and Jordan Potter.

The other B division placers, in addition to Brown, included Kaysen Nyberg, Quaide Houchin, Colby Thacker, Liam Wisehart, Noah Blakley and Hunter Craft.

Summing up the season, Sanford said, “We had a lot of kids who came out this year who had never wrestled before, some who had. Halfway through the season, they developed some bad habits that you just can’t have. I remember that week after that Tuesday dual in Basin as a turning point. We wired it up a little bit in practice, went to Lander and had a good tournament and then came to conference and did a good job.  I think it proved to some of them how hard they need to work, and as a coach, it made me realize some things I need push them on.  Some of it was, not worrying about adding more and more technical stuff, but rather, doing fewer things and doing the better.”
