G-R Wrestling dominates in Cody
The Greybull-Riverside Hounddogs came out strong for their first competition of the season at the Cody Invitational.
“We had a fantastic first tournament,” said Coach Tim Eardley. “Our kids wrestled tough and did well. There are always things we can improve, but overall, we are proud of them.”
Four athletes earned first place wins with 12 Hounddogs placing in the top four.
Haakon Craft, Sawyer Triplett, Tatum Triplett and Delta Craft all went undefeated to clinch top spots in their weight classes. “Haakon wrestled in the A division for the first time ever and won it which is very impressive,” said Eardley. “Sawyer is very physical. Delta dominated with three pins. Tatum wrestled with more confidence than last year which helped her win.”
Meet officials track statistics including which athlete at the meet had the most pins in the fastest amount of time. Out of 274 wrestlers, that standout performance was awarded to G-R’s Warren Eardley. “Warren had the most pins in the least amount of time (four pins in 6 minutes and 14 seconds) out of any wrestler in the tournament,” said the coach.
With 106 team points, G-R placed sixth out of nine teams. Thermopolis Middle School placed first overall with 170 points. “I would love to take first place, but when you’re wrestling against teams that are almost double our size and every wrestler scores team points, that’s tough. We will continue to work and try to place higher next week,” said Eardley.
The coach also noted impressive skills coming from his younger athletes, “It was very fun to see some of our brand-new wrestlers get their first takedown and some even won their first match ever, which is always exciting.”
Up next for the G-R grapplers is the Powell Invitational this Saturday.” We are going to keep working hard, learning, and keep our momentum rolling,” he added.
Fans are encouraged to fill the Riverside High School gym on Tuesday, Nov. 3 for the team’s first home meet. G-R hosts a triangular against Thermopolis and Worland at 5 p.m. in Basin.
