Good news for Wyoming Hunger Initiative and local foods producers
Recently two great things in the Wyoming food scene happened. Things that will help those experiencing food insecurity and will help us all eat healthier.
First great news was that the Wyoming Hunger Initiative is now an independent nonprofit organization. Their fight against hunger continues. The Initiative was started by Wyoming’s First Lady Jennie Gordon in 2019. Her inspiration was her mother Gertrude, who lived in Vienna, Austria during and after WWII. Going hungry was a daily way of life. While Gordon’s role as first lady ends January 2027, her fight to feed Wyoming will not. Thank you, Jennie.
The other good news is that UW Extension and the Wyoming Department of Agriculture has created a Wyoming Specialty Crop Directory online database. Many Big Horn County producers are listed in the data base whose products we can buy at local stores and directly from. This is a win-win situation. We will support local entrepreneurs plus eat/drink fresher Wyoming-grown items including wine... Cheers! The listings also include garden starts, and native trees/shrubs.
According to UW’s Robert Waggner, the database can easily be updated with new listings and revisions to existing listings. There are currently 1100 statewide listings. Cool. https://wyoextension.org/specialty-crop/.
