Despite having four open weights, Greybull-Riverside continues to excel in dual action, going a combined 5-0 in clashes last week against Worland, Wind River, Wyoming Indian, Big Piney and Rocky Mountain.

Coming out of the holiday break, the Hound Dogs set a positive tone for what was to come with a 51-24 thrashing of the Warriors Thursday night in Worland.

“They’re down a little, but anytime you can do that, it’s an accomplishment for a small 2A program like ours,” said Coach Rob Nuttall.  “As a unit, we wrestled really tough — boys and girls, varsity and junior varsity, however you want to dice it.  We looked really good and it was a super encouraging way for us to come back from the break.”

In Worland and then again in his team’s four wins at Saturday’s dual tournament at Wind River, Nuttall went with a boys lineup that featured Bennett Sanford at 132, Michael Bassett at 138, Loomis Alexander at 144, Reece Whisenant at 150, Caiden Sorenson at 157, Garrett Wiggins at 165, Nikoah Sorenson at 175, Zack Kuntz at 190, Camden Schriner at 215 and Curtis Strohschein at heavyweight.

“In each of the duals, we only lost one varsity match, which is really encouraging when you consider we didn’t fill a weight below 132,” said Nuttall. “To do that, in the position we are in, is asking a lot of young kids to step into big-time roles but they’re doing it.”

G-R won by margins of 27-3 against Big Piney, 52-3 against Wind River, 54-6 against Wyoming Indian and 51-6 against Rocky Mountain.

“Even on the girls side, we did a lot of good things from top to bottom,” Nuttall continued, referring to a group that included Makenna Schell and Kaluha Woolsey at 125, Rhianna Gaytan at 130, Gabby Dowling at 135, Ellie Holloway at 140 and Tawny Bertolini at 155.

Nuttall attributed all his team’s success “to the way the kids came out and practiced” coming out of the break. “We asked a lot of them in terms of the intensity of practices, how they approach practice, what they do during the day, and emphasized becoming a team and holding each other accountable — and they took it to heart. They deserve all the kudos for their performances last week.”

G-R is scheduled to return to action today (Thursday, Jan. 16) when it hosts the Big Horn County Dual Championships in Basin.

On Friday and Saturday, the grapplers will be in Shoshoni.  The Wranglers have traditionally hosted a dual tournament, but this year, it’s a bracketed tournament.  Nuttall called it “a good weekend for us to see where we stack
up with the rest of the state,” although he noted that several 2A teams including Thermopolis, Kemmerer, Cokeville, Moorcroft and Lingle won’t be in attendance.
