Hard work paying off for the Huskies
With winter weather back in the forecast for Saturday, the scheduled Greybull track meet was cancelled. Burlington was able to pick up the D & D Invitational in Worland on Thursday. “It was probably our best meet so far, as our numbers go,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “We had a lot of kids put in some great performances. It’s been a month now since our first practice and so the kids are starting to see their hard work pay off with good results.”
The Lady Huskies placed sixth with 41 points, just behind Thermopolis with 45 and Riverside with 47. “Sarah McNiven may have had the performance of the day, clearing 5-1 in the high jump. This was her first meet of the year and she is already pushing our 15 year old school record. Her dad and Coach Haslam have both been helping her, with good results.
“Other nice performances included Sky Olsen, improving a foot in the pole vault. Naomi McNiven got another state qualifying mark in the triple jump. Adison Haslam and Sarah are also knocking on the door in that event. I was also happy to see Linnie McNiven take a lot of time off her mile. She comes to practice every day, ready to work and it shows with personal bests each week in her events.”
The 4X400 relay team, consisting of L. McNiven, S. McNiven, Olsen and Mackenzie Mehr, qualified for state.
On the boys’ side, the Huskies have now had five high jumpers qualify for state: Bruce McNiven, Colt Haslam, Joe Bassett, Jordan Casey and Weston Gotfredson. “The mile was also a fun race to watch. Howard McNiven and Paul McNiven push each other every night in practice. For the first time, Paul edged out his cousin at the finish line. It’s great when you’ve got a couple kids who can push each other to the max. This time they were both rewarded with automatic qualifying times.”
Kyler Winters was the lone individual event winner by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault. Hunter Aagard threw for another personal best in the shot put with a 41-6, which qualified him for state. “Mickey Maroni and the rest of the throwers also had good days. It’s been a long time since we’ve had such excitement at our throwing rings. I give a lot of credit to Coach Mike Aagard and a couple of the volunteer dads. They’re building a program that I feel will build on itself in the next few years and become really successful.”
The boys placed fifth with 78 points, just behind Lovell’s 83.
“It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the halfway point of the season. We realize that every workout counts and that will pay dividends next month. The kids are starting to heal up a little bit, although we’re still dealing with a couple injuries,” ended Olson.
The Huskies head to Powell on Saturday for the LA Kohnke Invitational. Field events start at 9 a.m. The sprint medley relay will be held at 9:15, the 4X800 relay will be held at 9:30 and all other running events start at 11 a.m.
