Huskies 3-1 at tourney
The Huskies fared well in the Carbon County Classic, playing four varsity games and one JV game.
First up was Saratoga. Last season, the Huskies upset Saratoga in the second round of state play and gave them their only loss of the season. Saratoga is tough again this year and handed the Huskies their only loss of the weekend by a 75-70 score.
“We came out and got behind early, at one point being down more than 20,” said head coach Kirby Winland. “But as is true to the character of our young men, we were able to persevere as a team and we fought back to being within four with about two minutes to go.
“We had chances to win that game, which was an accomplishment in itself after spotting them 20 points.”
Encampment was up next, which resulted in another tight game for the Huskies but they won 57-53. On Saturday, their opponents were Hanna Elk Mountain and Rock River. The Huskies defeated Hanna, 72-37, and Rock River, 70-15.
“Overall, it was a good tournament that allowed all of our kids to get some playing time at one point or another, which is a greater challenge in 1A basketball than I was expecting. With many teams not having a JV to accompany their varsity, it’s always a win when we can get a big lead and play further into our rotation, which we were able to do this weekend,” said Winland.
The Huskies will have a busy week, playing Rocky Mountain on Tuesday night and then heading to the Wrangler Invite in Shoshoni on Thursday and Friday. In Shoshoni, they will get a rematch against Saratoga and play Kemmerer and Cokeville.
