Huskies beat Rams on the road
The Huskies had a quiet week this past week with a C game at home with Lovell Thursday and only one varsity match in Dubois on Saturday.
In Dubois, Burlington started off strong with an effective press that frustrated the Rams. The first two minutes of the game saw a steal from Weston Gotfredson and a layup by Rykael Andrew, a steal from Jordan Casey and a made three, another steal from Casey and a made basket from Gotfredson, which put the Huskies in a quick 7-0 lead. “Our boys got out to one of the best starts we have seen all year,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “They did a great job coming out and starting hard both offensively and defensively. Not only did we get a couple threes to fall but we were able to convert our forced turnovers into baskets.”
The Huskies finished the first quarter with an impressive 22-4 lead and headed into halftime still up 33-15. Dubois clawed back and got within eight points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t make up the deficit and the Huskies, 59-48, securing another conference win. “As the game progressed, we started to show signs of fatigue offensively,” said Winland. “A lack of movement and standing weren’t a great answer to the zone that Dubois went into, but we were able to hold on for the win. We gave Bruce McNiven a specific job to box out a specific player and he did a great job. Paul McNiven, Rykael and Weston did great jobs of limiting Dubois’ best player.”
Scoring was spread throughout the team but Gotfredson led with 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Bitner Philpott added 10 points and Casey had six points, six rebounds and three steals.
“I’m proud of how far we have come as a team so far this year. The boys have done a good job taking care of business and locking in the first seed,” said Winland.
In the last week of the regular season, the Huskies C team played at home on Monday and beat Powell 58-53. Burlington will head to Riverside on Friday with the JV at 4 and the varsity tip-off at 7 p.m. and will be in Ten Sleep on Saturday with a varsity tip-off at 7 p.m.
