The Burlington Huskies hosted Riverside Friday afternoon in their final regular season home game and prevailed 62-16.

“First off, Riverside is a very talented team,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “They came out and played hard. They are getting much better at the six-man game, but hats off to them for the work they’ve put in. They are well coached and play hard; you never know when it’s all going to click for them.”

“I think our team has really been coming together for the last few weeks. They have been working hard to get better; we still have some work to do, but it’s been exciting to watch them develop as a team.”

Offensively, the Huskies had 302 rushing yards and 185 passing yards for 487 total yards. Joe Bassett scored three touchdowns, Jordan Broederlow added two and Brikton Wardell, Will Aagard and Kyler Winters each had one.

“We didn’t throw as well as we could, but we did a good job blocking and running,” said Aagard. “When things come together like that, it’s just everyone knowing their assignment and going out and doing it. Obviously there are things we need to clean up but I think we are moving in the right direction.

“I thought our O line (Weston Gotfredson, Aagard, Winters and Matt Tempany) did a great job blocking. Joe and Rykael Andrew also did a great job blocking out of the backfield. We are lucky to have a stable of running backs who offer different styles. Jordan Broederlow, Jordan Casey, Joe, and Brikton all did some good things. Kole Walker came in and did some good things for us.”

Defensively, the Huskies had 34 solo tackles and 19 assisted tackles. Gotfredson got a sack and a fumble recovery and Winters had an interception and a pass breakup.

“I think we are playing as well as we have since I’ve been here,” said Winters. “We have guys contributing at all levels. One thing that stood out to me in this game was the number of hustle plays (plays that don’t get in the stat book but have a big impact on the game). Our defensive rushers (Brikton and Will) did a great job of making Riverside’s offense play a little bit different than they wanted. Coverage guys (Jordan C, Jordan B, Weston and Kyler) did a great job of not getting beat over the top. Our backers (Joe, Rykael, Weston, Kyler and Brody [Jordan B]) did a good job of filling the lanes and not letting their talented back get loose.

“All in all, I thought it was a well-rounded game for us. We missed a few and had some mistakes, but we didn’t let that get us down. We kept our heads up and made the plays we needed to in order to win.”

The Huskies played Greybull JV on Monday night and will face Midwest on Friday with kickoff at 1 p.m.
