The Huskies and 10 other teams braved the negative temperatures to compete in the Big Horn Basin Classic this past weekend. The boys’ side of the tournament pitted the Huskies against 2A Greybull, 3A Thermopolis, 2A Wind River and 2A Shoshoni. Burlington was 1-3 on the weekend but Coach Kirby Winland felt it was a great tournament. “I say it was a great weekend because with the exception of the Thermop game, we found ourselves in three really close games that provided us with good competition and pretty good JV games as well.”

The Huskies started off strong against Greybull heading into halftime with the lead, but Greybull continued to chip away and the game was tight throughout. “Our lead grew to three but with seven seconds left, Greybull hit a game tying 3 from the corner. The game went into double overtime after we gave up another lead in the first overtime and our play finally caught up with us and cost us the game. Loads of good experience from that game however,” Winland said of the 57-53 loss.

Next up for the Huskies was Thermopolis. They started strong again and ended the first quarter trailing by five, 22-17, but Thermop continued to grow its lead. “We came out and matched their intensity well for the first quarter but as the game progressed we weren’t mentally conditioned to play as physical of a game as it was. So as the game went on, we got more and more flustered with their physical play,” said Winland. Burlington lost that game, 84-56.

Saturday, the Huskies lost to Wind River 56-49 but got the win against Shoshoni in another close game with a final score of 67-63. “To get to play in a series of tight end game situations like that before regionals and state is invaluable. Our last game we finally got a win to right the ship and we look ahead to another good week of practice and conference play starting,” ended Winland.

The freshman boys will play on Tuesday in Greybull and Thursday at home against Ft Washakie at 4:00 p.m. The varsity team will play in Dubois on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and head to Ten Sleep on Saturday for a tip off at 7 p.m.
