Huskies break two more school records

Despite the winter weather that hit the state this past week, Burlington competed in Cowley on Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Invite. “It cleared up really well for a really nice day. It was close to perfect running conditions for our distance runners,” said Coach Ryan Olson.

This proved true especially for freshman Kelli McNiven, who broke another school record. “Last week, she broke the mile record. This week it was the 2 mile, shaving a full 10 seconds off the previous record. She followed it up by immediately running a leg of the medley relay, helping the relay team qualify for state. She was joined by Sarah McNiven, Clair Philpott and Adison Haslam in that race. These are great girls, and so fun to work with. They were out there earlier in the week, in the wind and rain, ready to get their workout in. It’s great to see that work pay off in the meets.”

S. McNiven also found success again in the high jump, taking first. Philpott took 4th in the mile. Sky Olsen placed 4th in the Pole Vault.

The boys’ Sprint Medley relay was after a record of their own on Saturday. Tridgon Aagard, Chase Bassett, Paul McNiven and Kellen Winters broke the previous record by one second, set in 2023. “These records are getting tougher to break each year, but the kids have their sights set on breaking them, and they get after it.”

K. Winters also took first in both the 800 meter and the mile, with Bradford Davidson coming in 2nd in both races. Paul McNiven took 2nd in the 300 hurdles with James McNiven taking 4th in the 110 hurdles. Bassett took 3rd in the Pole Vault, Matt Tempany took 4th in the triple jump and Aagard placed 4th in long jump.

“Other impressive performances included Chase qualifying for state in the pole vault, Adison in the triple jump and Claire in the mile. Claire has been such a fun addition to our girls’ team. She brings a fun energy and a nice work ethic to our distance runners.

I’m really happy with where the kids are right now in the season. We only have a couple of more hard weeks before we begin to taper a bit for Regionals. They have a nice focus and they realize what it takes to perform their best next month,” said Olson.

Burlington will have a few athletes headed to Casper for the Wyoming Track Classic on Friday and then follow up with a meet in Lovell on Saturday.
