Huskies edge out the Rebels

The Huskies hosted Riverside on Friday in an important Class 1A Northwest Conference game.
Joe Bassett put up the first two points for the Huskies, but Riverside answered back with a two of their own, which set the tone for a back-and-forth first quarter. Riverside held the lead until about halfway through the second and the teams went into the half with the Huskies up 26-20.
“I thought we really took a step in the right direction against Riverside. That game was another close one that could have gone either way,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “The boys did an excellent job of stepping up and executing our strategy, too.”
Burlington took over the second half and despite the continued back and forth intensity, they outscored the Rebels and eventually won, 50-36.
“There were definitely points during the game where they were facing a lot of pressure to deviate from the strategy we wanted to play but they stuck to it,” said Winland. “We did a pretty good job of executing our three keys which were: no dumb fouls in the first quarter, play a ‘hands off’ defense and no open threes.
“While we still have plenty to work on, it was a great step in the right direction.”
Casey McNiven led the Huskies with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Close behind was Toby McNulty with eight points.
The Huskies will have a busy week with a varsity match up on Thursday at home with Ten Sleep; tip-off is at 7 p.m. They will be on the road for the next two days with a Meeteetse showdown on Friday, JV at 4 and varsity at 7 p.m., and Kaycee on Saturday with JV at 1 and varsity at 5 p.m.
