The Huskies continue to move forward as they completed the ninth week of the basketball season with two wins and a loss. “Steps in the right direction was the theme of our week,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “All week during practice and during games, we saw the team making progress and taking steps in the right direction.”
The Huskies hosted Ten Sleep on Thursday. It was a slow start for both teams with Burlington leading at the end of the first quarter 10-6. They picked up steam in the second with their full-court press and converted steals into points, which led to a 27-7 Burlington lead at halftime. The Huskies did not look back and held the Pioneers to only eight points in the second half to win 63-21.  “Ten Sleep was a good game to clear our heads and keep progressing to our goal,” said Winland. “I would have liked to have played against their young guard to give us a better gauge at how far we have come in two weeks, but a conference win is a conference win.”
Weston Gotfredson led the Huskies with 11 points and six rebounds. Jordan Michaels added nine points and Joe Bassett had eight points and six steals. Jordan Casey contributed eight points and five steals.
Next up, the Huskies headed to Meeteetse for what would be the game of the week. Meeteetse took the lead in the first quarter 13-8, but the Huskies kept the game close, tying the score multiple times but never taking the lead from the Longhorns. Both teams had big second quarters with each team adding 23 points and they ended the third quarter tied up at 48. Meeteetse outlasted the Huskies and won,66-58. “We certainly had our chances to beat them and on their home floor,” said Winland. “It came down to the end and we just didn’t have the decision making that we needed to on the court or from the sideline.”
Gotfredson led scoring again with 14 points and eight rebounds. Michaels had 11 points, including three 3-pointers and three assists.
The weekend ended with a low scoring game Saturday in Kaycee.  The Huskies prevailed, 38-27.  “Kaycee taught us a lot,” said Winland. “We jumped out to an early lead, slicing and dicing their defense like if you were at a Benihana. We shot maybe the best we have all year the first half as well which led to some stagnancy the second half. It was good for us as coaches to see our offense against a team that’s going to pack it in defensively.”
Casey McNiven led the way in Kaycee with 15 points and Rykael Andrew led rebounds with nine and added three steals.
Burlington will have freshmen away games on Tuesday and Thursday, a JV game in Ft. Washakie on Friday with a tip off time of 4 p.m. and will host Dubois on Saturday for Senior Night. Tip off at 1:30 p.m.
