The Burlington Huskies ended their regular season on the road in Midwest. With an 81-15 win, the Huskies cemented their spot as the number one seed from the North.

“I think once our nerves calmed down, we were really able to step it up and execute at a high level,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “Midwest has several players who are pretty skilled. I thought we were able to upset their game plan and make it hard for their offense.

“I thought our whole defense played well. Joe Bassett, Kyler Winters and Rykael Andrew set a good physical tone. Brikton Wardell and Will Aagard did an excellent job of bringing pressure. Both Jordans (Broederlow and Casey) and Weston Gotfredson did a good job on the back end. It was tough sledding for most of the game. Rykael was able to record two scores on fumbles and Weston picked them off once. There were numerous other close turnovers that we almost forced.”

Burlington dominated on offense, racking up 404 yards — 224 rushing and 180 in the air. Broederlow had two rushing touchdowns and one touchdown catch, Casey had two touchdown catches, Bassett added two more rushing touchdowns and Wardell and Matt Tempany each added another touchdown catch. “Brody (Broderlow) had a big day running, throwing and catching,” said Aagard. “Joe had some really impressive physical runs and he also completed some big passes. Jordan C played an impressive game. He had some big catches and runs, but also completed a couple of throws for touchdowns. Kole Walker was a little banged up, but he was able to move the ball when he had a chance. The O-line (Weston, Will and Kyler) did a great job blocking all day and made some plays when they got their opportunities. Brikton has come along and is doing some good things on O.

“I feel like we are really clicking as a team. Guys are stepping up when their number is called. I feel like we are a team-oriented group and everyone wants to succeed.”

Heading into the playoffs, the Huskies are treating it like a whole new season.

“You only have one game for sure,” said Aagard. “Every week you need to go 1-0 to advance. Many teams are done and next week half more will be done. I think we need to remember what we have done to get us here and focus on that. This isn’t new territory for our guys so they understand the focus and dedication it requires to advance. We will see the best of Farson because they want to advance also. A few years ago, we were able to beat a number one seed on the road as a number four seed, so anything is possible. We just need to work on improving this week and not be content with where we are,” said Aagard.

In the first week of playoffs, the Huskies will host Farson-Eden on Friday with kickoff at 1 p.m. It is an official WHSAA playoff game, so admission will be charged — $5 for adults and $3 for students.
