Huskies hit homestretch of track season

The Burlington Huskies had a busy week with back to back meets in Shoshoni and Lovell. Coach Ryan Olson feels there are many benefits. “It’s always nice to give athletes more chances to prequalify for the state meet,” he said. “Meets held on consecutive days especially help our distance runners, who normally can’t compete in all of their events in one short meet and it’s always nice to give kids a chance to compete as much as they can. It brings out their best and lets them know where they can be most successful at the end of the season.”
In Shoshoni, the Huskies competed in a large meet with 24 other teams from across the state. The Lady Huskies placed seventh overall and the Huskies placed third with 86 points behind Lander Valley and Thermopolis. “This meet was especially nice because this is where regionals will be held next month and kids can get used to the facilities and feel more comfortable at that region meet,” he said. “Jordan Michaels improved his 400-meter time again with a  54.71, despite a windy day. Paul McNiven had a personal best time of 2:10 in the 800 meters and Taft Winters had his best shot put of the year at 37-8.”  Individual winners were Kyler Winters in the pole vault, Bruce McNiven in the high jump and Mickey Maroni topped 101 throwers in the disc. On the girls’ side, Brynn Preator prequalified in the 200 meters with a time of 28.61 and Sarah McNiven won the high jump.
At the meet in Lovell, S. McNiven broke her own school record from last week in the high jump, clearing 5-5. “She was definitely feeling it and having talented jumpers from other schools brought out her best,” said Olson. “That mark will allow her to compete in the Wyoming Track Classic (sometimes called the “Best of the Best”) this Friday in Casper. She will be joined by Kyler Winters in the pole vault and Howard McNiven in the 3200 meters.”
Another girls’ medley team qualified for state, this time made up of Adison Haslam, Joey Chatwin, Naomi McNiven and Linnie McNiven. Connor Hoyt also prequalified in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:51. “Connor works so hard in practice. It isn’t easy as a freshman to try to keep up with Howard and Paul in every workout, but that hard work pays off in a lot of good ways, like it did on Saturday.
“It’s hard to believe we’re down to our last couple of meets before Regionals. Some kids are battling through some nagging injuries, but we should be ready to go for this season’s homestretch,” ended Olson.
Burlington will be in Cowley on Saturday for the Rocky Mountain Invitational.
