Huskies, Lady Huskies claim third at Bill Gerrard Memorial Track Meet
The Burlington track teams did themselves up proud at the Bill Gerrard Memorial in Greybull Saturday. Not only did both 4x800 relay teams finish third in the 10-team field in AQ times, there were four high-jumpers who had AQs. Ryan McNiven, Kody Godfredson, Clayton Edwards and Victoria Nelson and freshman Jessie Michaels AQed by the slimmest of margins (.4) in the 3,200 run with a time of 13:30.64. Coach Ryan Olson said it is unusual to AQ in an event in that fraction of a second, perhaps only in an event like the 100 meters, not in long distance.
Coach Olson was very pleased by the results of the meet, giving credit to the athletes who came to practice with excellent attitudes and who worked so hard to improve and get better.
He credits a lot of the team’s good performances to the team of volunteers who come to practice and help in their areas of expertise. These include Brandy Lee, running, Preston Wardell and Mike Aagard, helping the throwers, Kenny Ellison and Whitney Neves, who mentor the pole vaulters. Olson said it is even more important and helpful considering they have 36 thinclads.
He was very happy with his young throwers, who work so hard, improving technique and distances knowing at big meets, the top placers are usually juniors and seniors – who have matured and improved every year. He singled out Mickey Maroni and Hunter Aagard for their dedication and the distances in the discus last week.
“I think they will do great things for us this year.”
As the season progresses Olson will be sharing news of athletes who have personal best times, distances, heights. One of his great satisfactions as a coach is to put names of athletes who attain PRs on the “wall of fame” at Burlington High School. He said track is an individual sport, but it is also a “team sport,” that it is not always who stands on top of the awards platform, but those who push their friends in practice, those who perhaps take a 7th or 8th place, relaying the story of a senior thrower who placed 8th at the State meet, throwing his team to the championship by a mere one-half point.
The Huskies will compete at the Shoshoni Invitational Thursday. Olson said since this is spring break, he is not sure how many athletes will attend, but is sure they will all do their best.
