Huskies nearing end of their track season

By Stephanie Tolman

The Burlington Huskies track team wrapped up the Rocky Mountain Invite on Saturday and with just two meets left before regionals, they are happy with their progress.

“We’re excited to see some kids peaking at the right time,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “This was especially true with Isaiah Morin, who improved his long jump by 2 ½ feet. Jumping over 20 feet puts him in all-state contention. For a sophomore boy, that’s quite an accomplishment.”

Sarah McNiven improved her season best high jump, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches. She will be joining Kyler Winters and Weston Gotfredson at the Wyoming Classic this Friday in Casper. “It’s a real honor to compete at the Classic,” said Olson. “These are the best athletes in the state. To take three athletes there for the third year doesn’t happen very often for a 1A school.”

On the girls’ side, Madison Aagard improved her shot put, Hannah Stanworth improved her discus by 3 feet, Sophie Olson improved both her triple and long jump, Orabella Heaton took a minute and a half off her two-mile time and Raygen Andrew and Emma Bullinger both cut time in the 200 meters. “I was happy to see Raygen and Emma both improve their 200-meter times by over 2 seconds,” said Olson. “These girls never miss a workout. It’s tough to improve a sprint time by that much late in the season, but they’re showing what hard work can do.”

Another example of this on the boys’ side is Colt Haslam. He matched a personal best in the 400 meters, finishing in 56 seconds. When all is said and done, Colt may be part of more state championships than anyone in school’s history. Even without all-state and individual championships, he’s been an important part of cross country, basketball and track team titles, said Olson.

Joining Haslam with personal bests on the boys’ side were Connor Hoyt, who beat his two-mile time by 8 seconds; Matt Tempany, who improved his season best shot put and triple jump by a foot; Trigdon Aagard, who cleared his best high jump by 2 inches; James Mears, who improved his shot put and James McNiven jumped 2 feet further in the triple jump.

The Huskies will compete in Lovell on Friday and Winters, Gotfredson and McNiven will compete in Casper on Friday for the Wyoming Track and Field Classic with boys pole vault and girls high jump starting at 4 p.m.
