Huskies notch two conference wins

The Burlington Huskies faced two conference opponents this week, beating Ten Sleep and St. Stephens.

“The weekend went well for the Huskies,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “We got two wins and saw some progress as a team in our offense efficiency.”

First up was Ten Sleep Friday night. The Huskies prevailed 59-20.

“We wanted to try and distribute playing time as much as possible during this game,” Winland said. “Our goal was to get off to a quick start and put the game away early so that we could rotate a little deeper into our bench throughout the game.”

Ten Sleep had other ideas and the Huskies struggled to get off to the start they wanted, leading just 10-5 after one.

“We have to give credit to Ten Sleep,” Winland said. “They handled our pressure well and were more disciplined than we were in the full court. They executed getting the ball to their personnel in the middle of the court, which really dismantled our pressure. On defense, Ten Sleep did a great job clogging the paint and giving us trouble getting good looks close to the basket. We really struggled to finish at the rim.”

Rykael Andrew led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds and Weston Gotfredson had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Casey contributed five assists and four points.

The Huskies had a much stronger game throughout on Saturday against St. Stephens, winning 76-48.

“We were able to shoot better from the outside and they didn’t pack in the paint as much and so we were able to attack the paint a little more effectively,” said Winland. “There were even times on offense that we were seeing our guys start to make those second and third passes in our offense, which led to some really nice open shots on the backside and in the paint. We want to see more of those moments as a coaching staff.”

Andrew had 19 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and Gotfredson also had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Huskies will be home all week with Greybull on Tuesday and Senior Night on Friday against Riverside with JV at 4 and varsity tip off at 7 p.m.
