Huskies optimistic headed into regionals

Burlington completed its regular season in Thermopolis at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday.

The Lady Huskies tied for eighth place overall out of 22 teams and the Huskies took fifth on the men’s side out of 23 teams.

“We like to call this meet ‘pre-regionals’ because we’re trying to get most of the kids in the events they’ll be doing at the regional meet this week,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “This was even more true this year, as we were only allowed to enter four athletes in each event. We’ve had great numbers these past few years, which is so nice in so many ways, but it always leads to some difficult discussions on who might be left out of events that they’ve been practicing all year. But the kids have been handling it well and being willing to do what’s best for the team.”

A focus for the Huskies this meet was their relays. “We really like to go into regionals with a lot of prequalified times, in case we get some bad luck with handoffs or injuries. We hit those goals, prequalifying four different relays with some excellent times.”

Some notable finishes on the girls’ side came from Paxton Philpott, placing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, Sarah McNiven took second in the high jump, with Breanne Walker and Philpott tying for fourth. “I was also happy to see a personal best from Raygen Andrew in the 100-meter dash. Sometimes it gets frustrating in sprint races, to see continual improvement each week, but Raygen has worked hard in practice and is seeing benefits here at the end of the year.”

On the boys’ side, Paul McNiven took third in the 800-meter run and second in the 110-meter hurdles, Connor Hoyt took sixth in the 1,600-meter run, Isaiah Morin took fourth in the long jump, Bitner Philpott placed second in the triple jump with Jordan Casey close behind with fourth place, Kyler Winters and Weston Gotfredson took second and third, respectively, in the pole vault and Rykael Andrew took sixth in the shot put. “Paul continues to improve his 110-meter hurdle time. I think he’ll be chasing our school records in both hurdle races next year.

“It looks like we’ll be going into regionals healthy and ready to perform our best. Our boys will be chasing their eighth conference championship in a row and our girls also have a great chance to stand on the podium,” ended Olson.

Burlington will compete in the 1A West Regional meet in Shoshoni. On Friday, field events will start at noon with running events starting at 1:45 p.m. On Saturday, field events start at 9 a.m. with running events starting with the 3200-meter relay at 10 a.m.
