Friday, Sept. 24, was a red-letter day for the Burlington Lady Huskies. In a match played in Dubois, they outlasted the Lady Rams, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-10 to put their first W in the conference win column

“We had a lot of really fun things start to come together for us this weekend,” said Coach Erin Bassett. “I know the part that I am most excited about was the fact that they never let up. One of our struggles has been creating and maintaining momentum. Friday’s match was the first time I felt like they continued to go for it – regardless of the score, or if they made a mistake. They just kept working and swinging.”

Bassett said the hard work put in by her athletes from the first practice through pre-conference tournaments to the present has paid off both offensively and defensively.

“Offensively we had a great night on the net,” she continued. Junior Kelsi Nicholson had 12 kills, Julia Nelson had 9; Victoria Nelson and Selena Call registered 5 kills each.

Setter Rylee Bassett had 21 assists Avery Nelson added another 7 “to help lead the Huskies to the win.”

From the serve line, Selena Call led the Huskies with 24 good serves including 5 aces; V. Nelson added 4 aces; A. Nelson 3, R. Bassett 2, and Nicholson and J. Nelson served an ace apiece.

“It was fun to see this team evolve – we are a young team,” Coach Bassett explained, pointing out that in Dubois the Huskies started four juniors and two sophomores pus a freshman libero.

“It is a big job to take on teams with more experience and maturity but these girls are really working hard. It’s exciting to see their hard work starting to pay off.”

The Huskies have their work cut out for them this weekend. They will be competing with teams from at least three classifications at the Bobcat Invitational Tournament in Thermopolis.
