Huskies split weekend at Carbon County Classic
The Huskies came out of the Carbon County Classic tournament with two wins and two losses.
“It was a pretty good first outing for our team last week,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “We were disappointed that the tournament dropped its JV portion, but in two of our games we were able to get some of our younger kids some decent playing time.”
Burlington played Saratoga first and lost a close game, 57-49. Bruce McNiven led the Huskies with 14 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Weston Gotfredson with 11 points and nine rebounds and Paul McNiven added 10 points.
Ft. Washakie was next up on Friday and the Huskies won easily, 55-34. P. McNiven led scorers with 15 points and five steals, followed by Rykael Andrew with 10 points and six rebounds. W. Gotfredson added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals and Joe Bassett added nine points and five rebounds.
The Huskies played Hanna Elk Mountain on Saturday can coasted to an easy win, 67-20. Bassett led the team with 12 points and four steals with Bitner Philpott following with 10 points and four steals and Levi Wardell led the defense with seven rebounds.
Ending the weekend for the Huskies was another tight game with Encampment. The teams battled back and forth but the Tigers held their lead, winning 59-52. Philpott led the team with 11 points and Andrew followed with nine points, including two 3-pointers. W. Gotfredson and P. McNiven led the defense with eight and six boards respectively.
“Two games this week were against some familiar opponents, Encampment and Saratoga. While both games were close, we lost both. We struggled to stop one or two players giving up 26 points to one player in both games. Our defense fundamentally struggled, which means we know what we will need to work on this week in practice. There were also bright spots this weekend, we are having some young players step up into some pretty significant roles so far. Hopefully, we can move forward and keep our heads up as it’s still early in the season,” ended Winland.
The Huskies played Rocky on Tuesday night and will head to Shoshoni for the Wrangler Tournament on Thursday and Friday.
