It was a beautiful day for football on Friday as the Burlington Huskies hosted Kaycee in their home opener.

Burlington put eight points on the board within the first three minutes of the game when Jordan Broederlow ran in a touchdown and Kyler Winters cleared the kick for two extra points. Brikton Wardell recovered a bad snap from Kaycee and the Huskies quickly moved up the field with Joe Bassett running in for another touchdown and Winters with another good kick. With those plays the Huskies quickly set the tone for the rest of the game.

“Kaycee has some big physical kids and they always play with intensity and effort. They were down a couple of kids, but they played hard,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “I was pleased with the week of preparation that we had going into this game. We had good focus and everyone was working to improve from game one. That’s a testament to the guys we have out this year; they really want to be a good team and are willing to put ego aside and do what’s good for the whole team.”

Offensively, Broederlow added another touchdown, Bassett added another two and K. Winters and Taft Winters both added one for the Huskies as they beat the Buckaroos 53-6.

“We had big plays from every senior and many of the underclassmen,” said Aagard. “I thought Joe, Kyler and the two Jordans did a great job early in the game. Rykael Andrew had some good throws and did a good job blocking. Weston Gotfredson, Brikton Wardell and Jesus Perez had some big receptions. Kole Walker, Taft and Matt Tempany came in and had some big plays for us. Later some of the younger guys were able to contribute. It was a great team effort and in the long run that is what will make us successful.”

Defensively, the Huskies’ stats improved quite a bit from their first game. As a team they had 24 assisted tackles, 22 solo tackles and four tackles for a loss.

“It was encouraging to see how we were able to rebound and play. I liked the way we were handling their running game and I thought our pass coverage was better,” said Aagard. “I appreciated that guys played true to the scheme and gave great effort when they were in. It was big to win the turnover battle and although we were smaller on our front, we didn’t get pushed around.

“Being a conference game, this was a big one. Overall, I’m excited to build on this game and improve. As a team, we just need to keep working and getting more confident in what we can accomplish,” ended Aagard.

Saturday the Huskies will travel to Ten Sleep with kickoff at 2 p.m.
