Husky thinclads see improvements in Worland
Despite Burlington having just started Spring Break, they had almost their entire team competing in Worland at the D&D Invitational. They took fifth on both the girls and boys sides out of 10 teams.
“Quite a few had to return early from their State FCCLA conference in order to compete. I was happy to see the kids make that kind of sacrifice. They know that the season is short and that every meet counts,” said Coach Ryan Olson.
The Huskies competed well with Sarah McNiven taking the high jump, clearing a 5-1 height and Kelli McNiven getting second in both the 3200 and 1600 and fourth in the 800 meter. Lauren Gotfredson took third in the Pole Vault. Kellen Winters took first in the 1600, Connor Hoyt took second in the 1600 and third in the 3200 meter and Paul McNiven took third in the 400 meter.
“It was nice to see a couple more of our talented freshmen show what they could do in a high school meet. Kelli and Kellen were both within 6 seconds of our school mile records. Kelli also ran the best 800 meter and 2-mile times among 1A teams in the state so far. Both of them have an incredible work ethic that will continue to produce some great times this year.”
Olson also highlighted their throwing team this year. “They are improving each week. Coach Mike Aagard and volunteer Cheyanne Jordan are doing an amazing job of building up our shot and disc program. We get more kids wanting to throw every year and I’m convinced it’s the relationship our coaches are building with these kids that is making a difference. Hailee Winterholler, Kourtnee Roper and Michael Broederlow all achieved season bests in their shot and disc events.”
Burlington will be missing a lot of sophomores and a few juniors this weekend with the ACT testing, but the rest of the team is headed to Powell for the LA Kohnke Powell Invitational on Saturday. Field events start at 9 a.m. with the 1600 Sprint Medley and 4X800 Relays at 9:15 a.m. and the rest of the running events at 11 a.m.
“We’re excited for another big meet with some great competition,” said Olson.
