Husky tracksters regional champs
The Class 1A West Regional was held in Shoshoni over the weekend and both the Huskies and Lady Huskies came away as regional champs. This is the boys seventh year as regional champs, the first for the girls since 2015 and the first time in 16 years that the boys and girls won together.
“It was close to a perfect weekend in a lot of ways for both our boys and our girls teams,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “There were so many personal best performances that helped the boys and girls bring home championship trophies. I love how these kids came together as a team at this meet. There were a lot of kids doing events that weren’t their favorite, running relays because their team needed them. As we could see on the girls’ side, every one of those points mattered. It’s hard to tell how much your sacrifice means until the points are all added up at the end. It’s something that every last kid can be proud of.”
Olson is referring to the girls’ win over Cokeville by one point and Saratoga by six points. The win came down to the final relay, the 4X400, with Burlington getting second place and securing the championship. On the boys’ side, the Huskies beat Saratoga by 104 points.
“I was impressed with Weston Gotfredson. He was racing around four different events Friday morning, which all happened to be at the same time. Even though pole vault is his first love, he made sure to get to the other events to help the team. The same could be said for Sky Olsen. There was a time she was racing down the pole vault runway, stopped halfway through and sprinted over to the finals of the 400 meters. Even at a two-day meet, you can be asked to do a lot in a short period of time. These are the kinds of efforts that helped us bring home two championships.
“There were especially a lot of points coming from our distance kids and our jumpers. They’ve worked so hard this year and to see that hard work pay off at the right time is really satisfying. Our relays were also especially strong. We’ll be depending on them again this weekend at State. The kids are ready, healthy and excited to finish this season strong,” said Olson.
The state meet will be held in Casper Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
