I did a thing
It is spring and therefore it is baby chick time. To say that I am a sucker for baby chicks is a gross understatement, but I can usually keep myself in check and order specific breeds from my favorite hatchery. This year though, I haven’t been able to find a hatchery that still has pullets.
Hence my impulsive action last Thursday. Angie and I went to Cody to get some dog food, and I needed to try on some shoes because I have been having a horrible time ordering shoes online and getting them to fit. We planned on a quick stop at Bomgaars then down to Wayne’s Boot Shop and on to Sierra Trading Post. Well…. It didn’t go as planned.
Bomgaars had just gotten a shipment of chicks in and they had two of my favorite breeds. The problem was, I knew that we couldn’t take them straight back home because Angie had a commitment in Powell at 2:30 p.m. I really argued with myself that I shouldn’t buy the chickens. How were we going to keep them warm? Give them water? Nurture them as they should be nurtured?
I had almost convinced myself not to get them when Angie walked past me and said, “You better go ahead and get them. You might not find them again.”
I knew she was right, and I figured we could figure out the rest of the stuff. So then we headed back out and found the boot and shoe aisle. Guess what? I found one pair of boots and one pair of shoes that fit perfectly and also showed me the problem. I guess it is true that as we age our feet get bigger. I have gone from a size 9.5 to a 10.
Well now we had plenty of time on our hands, but we had to keep in mind that the chickens had to be kept warm. Whenever we parked we made sure the sun was shining on the box to provide some warmth, but when we got to her appointment I noticed that they were getting thirsty and there were a few that were starting to droop because they weren’t warm enough. The cold ones got put on the dash and I put water in for the others.
One was quite droopy though, and I told Angie that it needed sugar water. She offered some of her Mountain Dew, and after we looked it over we decided it might just work. The chick took a little bit, I put it up on the dash with the others, and they all soon recovered. I put them all back in the box, set the box on the front heated seat in the pickup and waited for Angie to finish with her business.
On the way home we stopped in Burlington for quick haircuts. Yeah, those poor chicks got put through the wringer. Once I got them home I had to find a container to hold them and their food and water and a heat lamp. After I got them set up I noticed the droopy one from the afternoon was again looking pretty sad. I mixed some sugar water with some chick starter to feed her, the best small dish I could find was an antique salt cellar that was originally my great grandmothers. It worked perfectly, and after she got some of that in her tummy she took off and is doing well.
Yes, I did a thing or two.
