Jeffery L. Probst
Sept. 30, 1946 - April 2, 2024
Jeffery L. Probst passed away on April 2, 2024, in Tucson, Ariz., with his wife and son at his side.
Jeff was born Sept. 30, 1946, in Greybull, Wyo., to Ora D. and A.L. (Larry) Probst. He graduated from Greybull High School in 1964 and continued his education on a football scholarship at Carroll College in Helena, Mont. Jeff took a break to serve active duty in the Army National Guard. He returned to Helena where he met and married Nanette Stanger. Jeff and Nan moved to Billings, Mont., where Jeff graduated from Eastern Montana College with a degree in education and business.
After college the couple moved to Greybull, Wyo., where Jeff delighted his father by joining the family business, Probst Western Store. Jeff and Larry continued to grow the family business and added several Red Wing shoe store dealerships as their success grew. In 1995, Jeff and Nan had the opportunity to open a Red Wing Shoe store in Tucson, Ariz., where he built their first Tucson location into one of the top performing stores in the country. He and Nan later added another shoe store location in Tucson and a Mobile Shoe truck to their operation.
Jeff’s love of golf was a perfect fit for the Arizona lifestyle, so he and Nan bought a home in Green Valley, Ariz., allowing them to split their time between home in Wyoming and the golf courses of Arizona.
In Green Valley, Jeff was inspired to become active with the USGA where he served on the mid-am committee and as a rules official. His relationship with the USGA gave him the opportunity to officiate tournaments in several states, immersing himself in a lifestyle that he loved. Jeff was also very active in the local golf clubs in Greybull, Wyo., and Green Valley, Ariz., where he belonged to the Country Club of Green Valley.
Jeff is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nan; son Tyson of Greybull, Wyo., and fiancé Tania Thacker of Cody; sister Pam and husband Tim Miller and nephew Ryan Miller of Casper, Wyo.
A memorial will be held in Wyoming this summer.
