The Lady Huskies continue to rack up the wins with just two weeks left in the regular season. Thursday, they hosted Ten Sleep and won 54-11. “The girls came out really strong and played well in the first quarter, scoring 23 points to Ten Sleep’s 2,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “After this quarter, we started trying different things on offense so that we could play a game and not have the clock run right away before halftime. The girls worked the ball around and tried to get the best shot on offense.”
Freshman Sarah McNiven was only in the game for two quarters, but led the team with 12 points and five rebounds. “Our bench has done a great job of coming into the game and playing well for us,” said Haslam. Breanne Walker was close behind with eight points, five rebounds and five steals.
Friday, the Lady Huskies headed to Meeteetse where they again started strong, outscoring the Longhorns 19-4 in the first quarter. They continued trying different offensive strategies and worked on controlling the pace of the game. “Several of the girls on the bench got a lot of playing time because Jessie Michaels and Selena Call were not feeling well, so they only played a few quarters,” said Haslam. “Once again, the bench stepped up and played really well.”
Walker had a big game with 12 points, six rebounds and 10 steals. Paxton Philpott and Dalley Bassett each added 10 points.
The Lady Huskies did struggle in Kaycee on Saturday and the Buckaroos jumped out quickly, hitting three 3-pointers that pushed Kaycee to the lead at the end of the 1st quarter 14-9. Burlington would not be denied and kicked it up the next quarter, outscoring Kaycee 18-1. They continued to grow the lead, but still struggled to get the ball in the basket. “We were doing good things on offense, the ball just wasn’t going in,” said Haslam. “Our shot percentage was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it was definitely a struggle for us. It was nice to have a game where the girls had to play and push through challenges because we haven’t had one of those for awhile.”
The Lady Huskies did push through and with another great fourth quarter won 50-26. Philpott led with 11 points and eight steals. Close behind was Bassett with eight points and eight rebounds and Walker contributed eight points.
The Lady Huskies will travel to Ft. Washakie on Friday, with the JV playing two quarters at 4:15 p.m. and the varsity scheduled for a 5 p.m. tipoff. Burlington will then host Dubois on Saturday for Senior Night and the last home game of the season with the varsity playing at noon.
