The Lady Huskies had a successful weekend at the Carbon County Classic ending the weekend with four wins. “It definitely gave us some things to work on,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “But there were some really positive things as well. All of the girls were able to get some good playing time and everyone played really well off the bench.”
First up was a rough game against Saratoga. The Lady Huskies won 65-45, but it was a tough battle throughout. “Between both teams, over 70 free throws were shot, a majority of them in the third quarter. We don’t have a great free throw percentage, so that’s something we will focus on in practice this week. Saratoga really focused on guarding Jessie with a box-and-one on us. We had to work through some different parts of offense to adjust to that. They also had a tall post player, so it was good to work on defending a post,” said Haslam. Despite the defense, Jessie Michaels led all scorers with 26 points. All other players scored in the single digits but each player scored. Walker led rebounds with nine followed by Michaels with eight.
After the win, the Lady Huskies drove to Encampment to take on the Tigers, winning 52-34. “This was an interesting game,” said Haslam. “The girls just could not seem to get anything going. In the fourth quarter, I decided to try out our full court press and they woke up and it looked great, resulting in several steals that they converted on offense. Encampment also had a big post player, so we were able to adjust from things learned in the Saratoga game and cover her much better.” Michaels led all scorers again with 28 and seven steals, followed by Naomi McNiven with eight points, eight rebounds and eight steals and Walker with six points and three assists.
Saturday morning, Burlington faced Hanna Elk Mountain and won 68-32. “HEM has improved a ton from last year, so it was a game that we still had to work for the win, but we were able to tighten up things as well,” said Haslam. “It was a good game for the girls to focus on getting inside shots rather than shooting 3s. All our points came from inside the paint.” Michaels led with 30 points and eight rebounds. McNiven had 14 points and Walker had 10 points with seven steals and four assists.
The last game for the Lady Huskies was against Rock River, which they won 59-40. “It was the most intense game of the weekend for us. Rock River is a very physical and rough team. There were many times that it looked more like a wrestling match or football game than a basketball game,” said Haslam. Burlington had a great second quarter, outscoring Rock River 21-5, but lost much of their lead in the third quarter. Their full court press made an appearance again in the fourth quarter leading to steals that again cushioned the lead and some crucial free throws helped cement the win. “This was an exciting game and a good one to end the weekend on. They showed great pride and strength to push through after a long and tiring weekend.” Michaels led all scorers with 24 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. McNiven contributed 16 points. “Selena Call, Dalley Bassett and Hailee Winterholler also really stepped up this game and did some great things for us,” ended Haslam.
The Lady Huskies will host their first home game Tuesday night against Rocky and then travel to Shoshoni for the Wrangler tournament Thursday and Friday.
