Lady Huskies continue to see success
The Lady Huskies added two more wins this past week, topping both Greybull and Riverside. “We had a pretty good week. The girls are playing really well together and working really hard,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam.
Tuesday night, Burlington dominated Greybull, winning 48-14. “The girls played some great defense. We were able to press them and get some really good steals that converted to points for us,” said Haslam. “As a team, we had 32 steals!”
Defense was the name of the game for the Lady Huskies. “We knew that we would have to pressure Greybull’s posts inside. Once they get the ball, they do a great job of getting the ball in the hoop. We did a great job with our help defense and held their posts to two points each. The girls did a great job of transitioning and pushing the ball down the court. It was a fast-paced game, but a pace that we were in control of throughout the game.”
Scoring was spread out across the roster but Breanne Walker led with 13 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two assists. Naomi McNiven had 12 points, nine rebounds, 10 steals and three assists and Paxton Philpott had 10 points and five steals. Dalley Bassett had nine rebounds, five steals and five points.
Burlington hosted conference rival Riverside Friday night for senior night. “We knew this was going to be one of our toughest conference games,” said Haslam. “It was rough, but they pushed through and fought to come out on top. They pressured the ball full court throughout the game. This is pretty impressive to keep their legs for this amount of time and push on defense like they did. I was really proud of them for this.”
One goal for the Lady Huskies was to shut down Brooklyn Paxton. “She’s a strong player and is able to do a lot for their team,” said Haslam. “We pressured her, and even then, she scored 20 of their 41 points. We struggled a bit at times getting sealed on the inside and they would score on us that way.”
The Lady Huskies beat Riverside, 60-41.
Walker is the solo senior for the Lady Huskies and had a great game, scoring 18 points, going 4 for 4 from the 3-point line and adding six rebounds and three steals. Philpott was not far behind with 17 points and three steals. Sarah McNiven led rebounding for Burlington with seven rebounds and six points.
The Lady Huskies travel to St. Stephens Saturday with a varsity tip-off time of 1:30 p.m.
